Our school team won the runner-up in the 2023 Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge

From November 25 to 26,2023, the semifinal and final of the 19th Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge will be held in Chongqing. After fierce competition, a team composed of four students from Song Yingying (Class 2022 Master of Taxation), Li Yaqi (Class 2022 Master of Taxation), Gechang (Tax undergraduate of 2021) and Qin Yuxin (Tax undergraduate of 2021) won the national second place in the 2023 Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge. Peking University won the competition, and the Central University of Finance and Economics won the third place in China.

Founded in 2004, Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge is an international and professional tax competition held by Deloitte and Deloitte Tax Research Institute for students from universities across the country. Competition aims to promote the government, academia, industry and taxpayers four linkage, training "insight (insightful)", "fusion (integrated)", "innovation" (innovative) "3i" talent, has attracted more than 5000 undergraduate and graduate students, is one of the most value and influence of tax field.

Launched in September 2023, the competition attracted more than 200 students from 56 universities, including Peking University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Zhongnan University of Economics and Economics, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, University of Hong Kong, University of Macau, and Private Zhongyuan University. After the online preliminary competition on October 21, the team completed the in-depth research and analysis of real business examples, and completed the report, demonstration, inquiry, defense and report writing of a series of complex business issues such as cross-border merger and acquisition, transfer pricing, equity incentive and so on in the one-day high-intensity competition. After fierce competition, 13 teams won the 19th Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge; the final was held in Chongqing from November 24-26, and the final consisted of semi-final and final.

The semi-finals included group discussions, presentations, and jury questions based on simulated business cases involving tax credit calculation, equity sales and internal restructuring, group tax digital management, and possible ESG challenges for energy companies. In the semifinals, the three teams with the highest score in each group, or a total of six teams, advance to the finals. With solid professional foundation, strong ability to work under pressure and excellent performance, our team stood out among the participating teams with excellent performance and successfully advanced to the final of 2023 Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge.

The final was held on the morning of 26 November, The six qualified teams will compete in pairs. Based on the case questions and problems in the semi-final, they will propose a comprehensive restructuring plan for the group structure, identify the tax risks existing in the group's internal financing plan and alternative plans, especially the cost saving factors related to debt financing, comprehensively compare the advantages and disadvantages of overseas independent research and development and commissioned research and development, and make a choice. The two teams played different roles in the simulated business scenario of the case, and conducted independent analysis and presentation on different issues based on different positions. In the final round, the team of our school responded calmly, conducted an in-depth analysis of the business case with a clear structure and rich forms, fully demonstrated the depth and breadth of the team members' professional knowledge, reflected the comprehensive quality and good team spirit, and won high praise from the judges.

Each school selects a team to participate in the Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge by invitation. Our university has participated in the Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge for 18 consecutive years and is the only university to enter the final process every year, which shows the high level and stability of our school's tax talent training. The Deloitte Tax Elite Challenge team of our school is formed by the selection of the whole school from May to June every year. For several years, the team has won the strong support of the school leaders, the academic Affairs Office, the Department of Student Affairs, the Youth League Committee and other departments and relevant colleges, which fully reflects the achievements of the cultivation and construction of tax professionals under the background of promoting the construction of "new liberal arts" in our school. Professor Lv Min, Deputy dean of the College of Finance and Taxation, was the instructor; Zeng Ni, secretary of the Youth League Committee of the College, led the team; Zhang Lunlun, Associate Professor of the College, Qiu Yu, Zhang Wenju, Deputy director of the Party Office, Fang Kun, teacher of the Information Technology Center, and a team of experts from Sichuan Taxation Bureau participated in the whole process. The Institute will continue to work together with various forces inside and outside the university to build a multi-dimensional chain of tax talents training platform, and strive to cultivate outstanding tax talents with national feelings, innovation, insight and international vision.
